What Does An Orthodontist Do?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist; he or she focuses on the alignment of the teeth and jaws. Orthodontic intervention is required when a person has crooked or misaligned teeth. An orthodontist in Downers Grove can drastically improve a person’s smile and self-confidence.

What does an orthodontist do?

The majority of orthodontic patients are referred by their general dentist when there is a problem with the positioning of their teeth. Even if a patient is suffering no discomfort, an improper bite can have a negative impact on long term dental hygiene, eating and most certainly, appearance.

An orthodontist in Downers Grove has a number of ways in which he or she can correct a poor bite, all of which require some type of hardware such as braces, retainers, aligners, etc. The first step in correcting the malocclusion is a comprehensive assessment of the situation. Using impressions, X-Rays, and observation, the orthodontist can develop a strategy and recommend it to the patient.

Different types of braces:

There are a number of different approaches when it comes to fitting braces, the options include:

   * Traditional metal braces: Using a series of brackets that are affixed to the front of the teeth, an arch wire along with small rubber bands is employed. Over time, constant pressure in a predetermined direction will slowly straighten the teeth. This approach is perhaps the least expensive, but they are very noticeable.

   * Ceramic braces: Basically the same thing as traditional braces other than for the fact that they use clear or tooth colored brackets. They are obviously less noticeable but somewhat more expensive.

   * Lingual braces: For people who want to straighten their teeth but wish the treatment to be as unnoticeable as possible, lingual braces are a good alternative. Rather than have the brackets and arch wire exposed, they are fitted to the back side of the teeth. These types of braces are not appropriate for all conditions and can be quite uncomfortable.

   * Invisalign: Invisalign is not actually braces in the true sense of the word, Invisalign is a system consisting of a number of custom made “trays,” each one a little different. The aligners are changed every two weeks, over time the teeth are straightened. They are virtually invisible and can be removed while eating and cleaning the teeth.

Regardless of the approach you and your orthodontist in Downers Grove settle on, you can rest assured that when the treatment is finished, you will have beautifully straight teeth and a wonderful smile.
